Opening of the new morrisons…

In Bolsover we enjoyed the opening of our new morrisons this week. The store community representative contacted us to talk about getting involved with school. We have organised for the children to visit the store in the new year to look at how they are supporting the climate change agenda.

We are looking forward to working with Morrisons in the future around carbon reduction.

Plant a Legacy

On Monday 25th November our Year 2 children took part in the ‘plant a legacy’ scheme. They planted their own legacy in our school grounds, a blossom tree at the entrance of our Japanese garden. We spoke about how trees help with greenhouse gases and we challenged the children to go home and encourage their parents to plant a tree.

Schools in 25 countries across the globe joined in the plant a legacy scheme. including 21 Indian sates, 182 locations, 3285 trees were planted on November 25th 2019. Well done everyone.

From Radio 4 to a new buisnes connection

Last week, in the middle of our COP25 excitement, we were contacted by a gentelman who introduced himself as the Community Engagement officer for the company iSec.

What we do

iSec are really interested in making contact with us. They are eager to get involved with our climate change mission. They heard us on radio 4!

We have made plans to meet in the new year, but they also agreed to sponsor our trip to COP25. Thanks iSec, we look forward to meeting with you.

Smurfit Kappa – Working with local buisneses

As a school we have worked with our local Smurfit Kappa site for a number of years. Smurfit Kappa is a packaging company. They make boxes. However Smurfit are a very sustainable company.

Over the last few years they have helped us work on our outdoors. They have been instrumental in support the work we have done in getting children learning ousdide, especially in encouraging outdoor science lessons. They helped us tidy up our outdoor, build a number of different features in our site and have also supported us with funding and manpower. They also helped us when join up with other companies when we have needed things they can not help with. They have been really good to us.

Smurfit are very interested in climate change too and are a very sustainable as a company. So, when we contacted them to tell them all about our next venture they were only too eager to get involved. When we told them we had been invited to COP25, they were very excited for us. They really wanted to help and get involved too. So, firstly they helped with sponsoring my trip to Madrid, which we were very pleased with. But they were also eager to get more involved. I have a meeting booked with them in the next few days to talk about where we go from here. We are very excited about our future relationship with Smurfit Kappa and its employees.

United Nations Invite

As the first school in the UK to become a Climate Change Hub, we have had lots of interest in the work the school has undertaken around Climate Change. On Monday, 18th November, we were lucky enough to be contacted by the United Nations via EduCCate Global (our Climate Change lead company) to be invited to show case our school at a special event. In the first two weeks of December the United Nations holds a huge conference every year to discuss climate change. This conference is called COP25.
COP25 is the twenty-fifth Conference of the Parties (COP) on climate change, sponsored by the UN. It serves as the formal meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to which all 197 Parties of the Convention send representatives.
It is a very big and important global event and will be reported on by the worlds press. With a lot of begging and sweet talking two local companies (Smurfit Kappa and isec, who are regenerating the old Coalite Site) have agreed to sponsor the trip.
So, next week I will travel to Madrid (fully sponsored not using school money!), as the schools representative, to share our schools story on the worlds stage. We are very excited about this and are very humbled to be asked to attend. While I am away Mrs Fieldsend will step up and Join the schools management team to help support the school in my absence. I will try to keep parents up to date using our school Facebook page while I am away. We truly believe in the work we have done this year and are passionate about the fact that even young children can begin to understand climate change and can begin to make changes to help save their world. Headteacher Update Magazine…

Today we have received our copy of Headteacher Update magazine. Headteacher Update is the only magazine delivered directly to every primary school headteacher in the UK. It is published six times a year, at the beginning of each term and half-term, to keep headteachers up-to-date with everything going on in primary education.

The front page feature this week is written by yours truly! It is the first time we have had the opportunity control the dialogue around our Climate Curriculum and how we have embedded it into our curriculum. Please click on the picture or copy and paste the link below to have a read.

Reusing bottle tops…

This week we are launching our first reuse project. We are asking children to ask family members to start to collect bottle tops. The tops need to be plain in colour, but can be any size. Pop bottles, milk carton anything which is hard plastic. I have 100 Polo, the climate change Bear, badges for the first 100 children that collect 100 bottle tops. You don’t need to stop at 100, but will need to bag up the first 100, to receive a badge. Hand the bag into the office, with your child’s name on, to receive a badge. We are going to use these bottle tops to create some amazing climate change art, just like below.
